Pericles has written a very
thoughtful blog. We live in troubled and complicated times. There are many
reasons for this. However, as individuals we can only be responsible for
ourselves:
"Do not be idolatrous about or bound to any doctrine, theory, or ideology,
even Buddhist ones. All systems of thought are guiding means; they are not
absolute truth.
Do not think that the knowledge you presently possess is changeless, absolute
truth. Avoid being narrow-minded and bound to present views. Learn and practice
non-attachment from views in order to be open to receive others' viewpoints.
Truth is found in life and not merely in conceptual knowledge. Be ready to
learn throughout our entire life and to observe reality in yourself and in the
world at all times.
Do not force others, including children, by any means whatsoever, to adopt your
views, whether by authority, threat, money, propaganda, or even education.
However, through compassionate dialogue, help others renounce fanaticism and
narrowness.
Do not avoid contact with suffering or close your eyes before suffering. Do not
lose awareness of the existence of suffering in the life of the world. Find
ways to be with those who are suffering by all means, including personal
contact and visits, images, sound. By such means, awaken yourself and others to
the reality of suffering in the world.
Do not accumulate wealth while millions are hungry. Do not take as the aim of
your life fame, profit, wealth, or sensual pleasure. Live simply and share
time, energy, and material resources with those who are in need.
Do not maintain anger or hatred. As soon as anger and hatred arise, practice
the meditation on compassion in order to deeply understand the persons who have
caused anger and hatred. Learn to look at other beings with the eyes of
compassion.
Do not lose yourself in dispersion and in your surroundings. Learn to practice
breathing in order to regain composure of body and mind, to practice
mindfulness, and to develop concentration and understanding.
Do not utter words that can create discord and cause the community to break.
Make every effort to reconcile and resolve all conflicts, however small.
Do not say untruthful things for the sake of personal interest or to impress
people. Do not utter words that cause diversion and hatred. Do not spread news
that you do not know to be certain. Do not criticize or condemn things you are
not sure of. Always speak truthfully and constructively. Have the courage to
speak out about situations of injustice, even when doing so may threaten your
own safety.
Do not use the Buddhist community for personal gain or profit, or transform
your community into a political party. A religious community should, however,
take a clear stand against oppression and injustice, and should strive to
change the situation without engaging in partisan conflicts.
Do not live with a vocation that is harmful to humans and nature. Do not invest
in companies that deprive others of their chance to life. Select a vocation
which helps realize your ideal compassion.
Do not kill. Do not let others kill. Find whatever means possible to protect
life and to prevent war. Possess nothing that should belong to others. Respect
the property of others but prevent others from enriching themselves from human
suffering or the suffering of other beings.
Do not mistreat your body. Learn to handle it with respect. Do not look on your
body as only an instrument. Preserve vital energies (sexual, breath, spirit)
for the realization of the Way. Sexual expression should not happen without
love and commitment. In sexual relationships be aware of future suffering that
may be caused. To preserve the happiness of others, respect the rights and
commitments of others. Be fully aware of the responsibility of bringing new
lives into the world. Meditate on the world into which you are bringing new
beings.
Do not believe that I feel that I follow each and every one of these precepts
perfectly. I know I fail in many ways. None of us can fully fulfill any of
these. However, I must work toward a goal. These are my goals. No words can
replace practice, only practice can make the words."

I am embarrassed, but honest enough to admit that in no
way can I embody such ideals. As usual Dawn you leave me speechless, but so
does humanity. These are maxims that I can aspire to but in many respects I
feel to far gone to make them a personal reality. It's not a bad thing to me. I
love and respect every line above believe that they can be achieved but there
has to be some trust in my fellow human to let go and breath.
Maybe someday... :-)

Shucks, Peri, no need for embarassment.
I'm not perfect with these ideals...I'm no saint. None of us are...its part of
the point. It is the striving that counts.
Reread the last precept:
"Do not believe that I feel that I follow each and every one of these
precepts perfectly. I know I fail in many ways. None of us can fully fulfill
any of these. However, I must work toward a goal. These are my goals. No words
can replace practice, only practice can make the words."
Practice makes perfect..... ;-)

Cici...I'm always thinking of you ;-)
Oh...and I suspected as much about Peri!
Peri...do breathe...even when Luis is in the room.
To breathe, or not to breathe: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The puffs and toots of noxious fumes,
Or to take arms against all fibrous foods,
And by opposing end bad air?
(my apologies to Shakespeare, of course)

I dunno about those precepts, Dawn: it seems to me that
if you tried to live them all, you'd end up like Robocop in Robocop 2:
paralysed and unable to function.
What happens in the film is that a namby-pamby social worker reprogrammes
Robocop with about 50 Prime Directives- things like "pool all opinions
before you act" and "always see the other person's point of
view"- and when Robo comes face-to-face with a gang of young thugs, he
can't step forward without stepping back, he can't go for his gun without
asking permission- he's useless. He has to electrocute himself to clear his
brain.
There's also another example in Star Trek, where nice Kirk (or super-ego Kirk)
gets split off from animal Kirk (or Id Kirk) in a transporter malfunction. They
lock up the wild screaming animal Kirk in the brig and put nice Kirk in charge
of the ship, only to find that the nice Kirk's incapable of making a decision!
I certainly advocate acting with decency, morality, compassion- but eventually
a person has to say "Stuff it- I'm going with what my gut tells me"
and act. I spent half a lifetime ignoring my gut instincts, trying to think
things through first, trying not to offend anyone, till I realised that usually
my gut had it right.
That's my philosophy, anyway. So you go with Buddha, and I'll go with Robocop
and Star Trek!

Thank you for your insights, Dave, and
SciFi metaphors (I loved that Star Trek episode...btw).
However, think carefully....not one of those precepts deny acting from your
gut. I'm not sure where you see the difference.
Both of your examples represent extremes of living in one side or the other. I
would suggest that we live in the tension of both. Its how we choose within
that tension that counts.
I am a big believer in listening to intuition, listening to heart, listening to
gut.

Okay, yuckiest poo joke ever...
A little boy blows up a balloon and starts flicking it all around the house
with his finger. His mother tells him to stop it as he's liable to break
something, but the boy continues.
"Johnny!" Mom screams. "Knock it off. You're going to break
something."
He stops and eventually Mom leaves for a short trip to the shopping centre.
Johnny starts up with the balloon again after his mom has left for the store.
He gives it one last flick and it lands in the toilet where he leaves it.
Mom comes in and while putting away the grocery gets the urge. A diarrhoea run.
She can hardly make it to the toilet in time and SPLASH, out it comes. When
she's finished, she looks down and can't believe what she's seeing. She's not
sure what this big brown thing is in the toilet! She calls her doctor. The
doctor is baffled as she describes the situation, but he assures her he'll be
over shortly to examine everything.
When he arrives she leads him to the bath room and he gets down on his knees
and takes a long, hard look at the thing. Finally, he takes out his pen and
sort of touches it to see what it might be and POP! The balloon explodes and
poop is everywhere. On him, the walls, etc.
"Doctor! Doctor! Are you all right?" she asks.
He says, "I've been in this business for over 30 years, and this is the
first time I've ever actually seen a fart !"

I have a problem with:
Do not force others, including children, by any means whatsoever, to adopt your
views, whether by,,, even education.
Maybe he's talking about some OTHER kind of education.
I've just been having an on-line discussion with some Christians about
evolution, and the world NEEDS a way to educate children.
Also,
Do not accumulate wealth while millions are hungry. Do not take as the aim of
your life fame, profit, wealth, or sensual pleasure. Live simply and share
time, energy, and material resources with those who are in need.
The 3 heads of DreamWorks raised $1.3 million for their favorite candidate,
hoping to build a war chest that can match Hilary's. I see nothing wrong with
accumulating wealth. If millions are hungry... well, Bill Gates and Warren
Buffet have donated ~ $60 billion to the Gates Foundation. If they need my
help, let them ask. Politely.

Every time I'm in New York, I go up to
this hot dog vendor that I happen to know is a devout Buddhist.
In my most serene voice, I ask him, "Make me one with everything."
And he's never done it.
There was a blonde standing next to a river. She saw another blonde standing on
the other bank, and yelled out to her, "How do I get to the other
side?"
The second blonde looked up and down the river, and then shouted back,
"You are on the other side."

Hi hANDSOME! Thank you for your comments.
I agree that structure is very useful...but it is ongoing and everchanging.
Look at nature and how our "structures" cannot withstand nature's
constant, relentless growth process. The weeds and tree roots grow through the

A little girl walks in to the lounge one Sunday morning
where her Daddy is reading the paper.
"Where does poo come from?" she asks.
Father feeling a little perturbed that his 5 year old daughter is already
asking difficult questions thinks for a moment and says:
"Well you know we just ate breakfast?"
"Yes," answers the girl.
"Well the food goes into our tummies and our bodies take out all the good
stuff, and then whatever is left over comes out of our bottoms when we go to
the toilet, and that is poo."
The little girl looks perplexed, and stares at him in stunned silence for a few
seconds and asks:
"And Tigger?"

Hi bruinguy44! Welcome to my blog and
thank you!!!
I think what the precept means is that I don't force my children to adopt my
belief structures as a form of dogma. Christianity and evolution are imposed as
dogma when they are theories. Nobody really knows how the world works.
As far as accumulating wealth goes: I feel that the quote is addressing greed.
Bill Gates and Warren Buffet's generosity notwithstanding, these people still
have more than they need.
I admit to striving for a certain degree of comfortableness with an income
greater than what I have now, but that is not the same as accumulating wealth.
Thank you for the Koans!

Cici...you're adorable!
hANDSOME...I grew up in Kaneohe. But I don't have your history. My mom grew up
in Hawaii but my dad is a transplanted Mid-Westerner. My family are all still
there. Kahuku sugar....yah, you're homegrown local.
I looked up Tiare on google images...I love those flowers!!! We called them
gardenia (my dad is sooooo haole!) They smell so sweet. Plumerias are nice too,
but you're right, they're not the same.
Nice to meet you!!!

Dawn, is it true that Hawaii's state motto is
Haka Tiki Mou Sha'ami Leeki Toru
(Death To Mainland Scum, Leave Your Money)?

Uh, yeah, Dave....something like

I think you may have a few kangaroos loose in the top paddock, my friend!

You've been doing your research! I'm very impressed.
Another way to say what you just said is:
"You're a few sandwiches short of a picnic."
OR
a few snags short of a barbecue
OR
a stubbie short of a six-pack.
...I think you get the idea.

Yah... me too. I'd invest some of my genetics in her in a second if I lived
closer... cuz I heard her stocks are pretty good these days... :)
